So you’ve booked your shoot and marked a date on your calendar. What’s next as you prepare for your session? One of the most common things I get asked is how to pick what to wear to your photoshoot. It can be hard as someone not behind the camera to determine what is the best option for your shoot. The good news is, I am here to help! I’ve compiled this blog post to help you have the best session possible starting with the perfect outfit.
A good place to start when deciding what to wear is by analyzing what you already like to wear. It sounds simple, but the truth is the most flattering thing you can wear in photos in confidence. Feeling good in the clothing you choose should be your top priority. Wearing clothes that you can’t move around in or constantly have to adjust is the quickest way to limit your poses, ability to be in the moment & ultimately not enjoy your photos as much as you could have
Color theory is prevalent everywhere in our lives, and your session is no exception. Picking color(s) to stick within whether you’re having a solo session or a large group is a great way to make sure you’re cohesive. Color theory starts with our location. For example, if we are doing our session at a park, there will be earth tones in our palette immediately. Greens from the trees and grass, browns, beiges, etc. If we’re at a flower garden, we may have some brighter colors like pinks, purples, and oranges as the background. In a city we can have many difference colors, textures, and backdrops before you ever step into the photo.
During our session, I will be using the outfits you choose and analyzing the backgrounds to decide where the colors look harmonious together. Because of this, I’d always recommend picking colors/patterns/textures that match your ideal location and background!

If you have more than one person in your photos, please know you do not have to wear the exact same thing. In fact, I wouldn’t recommend this! Having your own individual styles come through while still wearing clothes in the same color palette is the best way to look cohesive and natural together!
Whether its inspiration photos you found online or pictures of yourself that you really love, take a long look at them. What clothes are you or they wearing? How do they look in the environment they’re in? What do you like about yourself? These are the things you should be highlighting in your photos.
